Same base of ten, same eight fan: Shanghai rules give eighty, Cantonese rules give 2560 — a thirty-two-fold gap. Big hands are safe to chase here, and because the numbers stay mild, many tables settle once at the end of the night rather than every hand.

Settling once at the end is exactly where a scorekeeper earns its keep: two taps per hand, and when you pack up the transfers are already worked out.

Does it work for nearby cities?

Yes. Most tables around Jiangsu and Zhejiang use base × fan; the fan tables differ slightly from city to city, so use the extra-fan stepper for whatever your table counts.
