Counting fan the Hong Kong way

Hong Kong scoring starts from a chicken hand, with one fan per honor set, three each for half flush and all triplets, seven for a full flush, and thirteen — the cap — for big three dragons, big four winds, thirteen orphans and nine gates. Each extra fan doubles the money, so three fan and eight fan are thirty-two times apart.

Common questions

How does it differ from Cantonese rules?

The formula is identical — base × 2^fan — but the fan table and cap differ. Hong Kong usually caps at thirteen and counts honor sets individually, while Cantonese tui-dao-hu tends to cap at eight. Pick the matching entry; the settings are the same.
