Guandan Level Rules: How Many Levels You Gain and How to Clear A

Quick reference for Guandan level advancement: double win gains three levels, first-and-third two, first-and-last one; how the level card runs from 2 to A and what it takes to clear A.

Levels gained depend on your partner

Guandan is four players in two teams, partners sitting across. When a round ends, the winning team’s advancement depends entirely on where the first player’s partner finished.

The level card runs 2 to A and stalls at A

Levels run 2 through 10, then J, Q, K, A. Advancement caps at A: even a three-level double win stops at A if you were one short.

Once at A you must win again: in the round played at level A, your team needs first place with the partner not finishing last — a double win or first-and-third — to clear A and take the match. First-and-last merely holds A for another try.

Common house variants

House rules differ, so settle three things before you start: whether three failed attempts at A send you back to 2 or down a level; whether the red-heart level card is wild; and how tribute works. None of it changes the table above — all of it changes how loud the table gets.

Tired of tracking this by hand?

The Guandan scorekeeper on Tallyo does all of this automatically: tap who went out first and where the partner landed, and both teams’ levels advance, stall at A and clear A by the book — with optional money settlement. One room code, four phones, live.
